A newly discovered asteroid came within 7,500 miles of Earth this afternoon.

The asteroid, 2011 MD, passed by Earth at around noon on Monday. It was between 15 and 60 feet in diameter.

An event like this happens once every six years according to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

A smaller asteroid actually struck Earth back in 2008.

An asteroid about the dimensions of a bus will glide above the Atlantic Monday morning. It will move only about 7,500 miles over the ground. That is closer to the earth than the moon. It is the 5th nearest such incident recorded. I read this here: Fifth closest Asteroid recorded passes earth
