New Orleans- On July 7th a man and woman were found guilty in Orleans Parish Court for cruelty to animals and not having the proper permit to posses a non-human primate.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Enforcement agents confiscated four monkeys from Joanne Susanne Newsberger, 64, of Rio Hondo Texas and James Wells Poole, 62, of St. Augustine, FL during their “street act” on Bourbon Street.

Newberger and Poole had received citations for animal cruelty and failing to posses correct permits to possess monkeys after LDWF agents witnessed their “act” and apprehended their monkeys earlier in this year.

The Honorable Judge Sean Early Waived any fines the two may face and ordered Newberger and Poole to forfeit the monkeys to the state. The monkeys will be donated to the Louisiana Purchase Zoo and Gardens in Monroe where they have been living since being confiscated.
