Five Angola security officers are out of a job today. Four resigned and another was fired after being investigated for their role in a prison 'sex party' scandal.
Initial reports allege that officers at the Louisiana State Penitentiary accepted cash for ignoring sexual activity between inmates and visitors. The officers are also accused of giving some prisoners cell phones and other contraband.
16 inmates are accused of having sex, or attempting to have sex with visitors to the prison. Another inmate watched the acts on surveillance footage. Disciplinary action is being taken against all 17 prisoners involved.
Once Warned Burl Cain was tipped off about the parties, he set up surveillance to catch the compromised officers and inmates in the act.
Public Information Officer for the prison, Gary Young said "they were able to go in and change the security cameras so that they could record the events and this was of course not known to our population and once they saw the tapes they realized there was a problem."
Once questioned, all of the inmates involved in the scandal confessed. The 'sex parties' are said to have started in 2004. No arrests have been made as a result of the investigation and the security officers who've left the prison have not been charged with a crime. The Master Sergeant who was fired is appealing her termination.
