Pet safety a must during cold weather
Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — Pets are extra sensitive when the weather turns cold. Debbie Pearson with the Companion Animal Alliance says when it's freezing out, the last place your pet should be is outside.
Even though there are lots of ways to keep your pet warm when it's chilly out, with temperatures going into the 20's, it's very dangerous to leave them outdoors, even with protection.
“When you get in the low 50’s, many pets are not comfortable. Below that, in the 40’s, they're chilly; below 40, they should come inside,” stated Pearson. “You can use cardboard (and) newspaper, but if it gets down - freezing - you need to bring them inside.”
Pearson goes on to say it's not a bad idea to give your pets some extra food if they're outside when the weather turns cold; it gives them extra energy to keep their core body temp warm.
