BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — What’s in a name? A whole lot if you ask Kleinpeter Dairy and Friends of the Animals. That’s because of a joint effort between the two to raise awareness about the need for funding for animal rescue operations in our area.
On Thursday, June 28, Kleinpeter announced a plan to help raise money for Friends of the Animals. They are trying to encourage donations to the organization by allowing people to name the new born calves. Last night, the first baby made its way into the world.
Sweetie Pie gave birth to her first calf early Tuesday, June 3 in Montpelier.
"Sweetie Pie acted as if this were her 5th baby," Jeff Kleinpeter said. “She licked her baby dry: perfect! Sweetie Pie was milked early this morning, since her udder was so big yesterday, and she is right back with her baby now.”
Soon, the new calf will have a new name, and hopefully help a lot of animals in the process.
For a $100 donation, a calf will be named after you. A $50 donation will buy a brick with your pet's name on it for the Friends of the Animals walkway. For $25, you will receive a Kleinpeter Moo Crew T-shirt.
There are about 800 calves born at the dairy every year.
“I think at this time their contributions amount to about $10 thousand a month and we want to raise awareness and double that number, and after we get to that point and time we would like to double that number again,” Jeff Kleinpeter, said.
The dairy is also sponsoring an adoption day, which is set to be held on July 8 in Perkins Rowe.
