BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — A real picture with a fake message has dog lovers on Facebook fearing their pet's safety. The image shows blocks of cheese with nails stuck through them, and a report that says these dangerous dog treats are being seen at dog parks around the nation (Chicago and Massachusetts).
The claim, however, is completely false.
Snopes.com is a site devoted to investigating urban legend claims to see if they’re real or not. This latest Internet shocker has been proven completely false.
How did the rumor get started?
According to Snopes.com, the photo began circulating Facebook just a few days ago. The image has now gone viral due to its shock value, believability, and a photograph.
The photograph in question is real, but it was taken from a news story about an event that happened in Buenos Aires back in July 2011. A dog walker there found the treats near a kennel. However, no reports of an animal being harmed before or since the story ran have been verified.
Snopes.com also reports there is a similar dog-related claim that antifreeze is being found in water bowls. They say that this also seems to be a false claim as it has yet to be reported by a creditable news source.
