Birthday party like no other planned at BR Zoo
BATON ROUGE, LA — BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo is having a party…and you’re invited! Join us at the Zoo on Saturday, September 24, as we celebrate our female black rhino turning two-years-old.
How do you celebrate a rhino’s birthday? With cake, of course! Zuri, the Baton Rouge Zoo’s soon-to-be two-year-old, will have a cake made of many of her favorite treats including carrots for “candles.”
The Zoo is planning to give Zuri her cake right after noon, but visit all day for fun activities. A large birthday card will be at the rhino exhibit so visitors may write their birthday and good wishes to Zuri. They will also be handing out cupcakes, while supplies last, to visitors while Zuri enjoys her “cake.”
Zoo staff will be on hand to give chats explaining how the ingredients in Zuri’s cake are actually good for her. Wildlife Safari Amphitheatre shows take place at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and different games and crafts will take place between shows. Children will be able to make their own card for Zuri.
Zuri was born September 28, 2009. The black rhino is part of a Species Survival Plan (SSP). The SSP is a cooperative population management and conservation program for rhinos in zoos and aquariums in North America.
Organized by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the plan manages the breeding of a species in order to maintain a healthy and self-sustaining population that is both genetically diverse and demographically stable. As an accredited member of AZA, the Baton Rouge Zoo participates in the rhino SSP. With less than 4,000 black rhinos left in Africa, a viable captive could be a hedge against extinction.
