Valentina Wilson
Anchor
Valentina Wilson is the co-anchor for NBC 33 News at 5, 6, & 10 p.m. and medical reporter for 33 MD.
A critically acclaimed anchor/reporter, Val got her first break on television as an intern and on-air reporter for WVLA in 1992.
Her experience at NBC 33 allowed her to move on to other positions. Since then, Val has worked at KLFY in Lafayette, LA, KVVU in Las Vegas, NV, and was an Anchor/Reporter at local station WAFB.
In addition to being an anchor and reporter, Val has also worked as a meteorological forecaster. She loves writing and has freelanced for various publications including ESSENCE magazine and The (Baton Rouge) Advocate.
While in Vegas, Val had the opportunity to interview several celebrities and even covered a story with boxer Laila Ali and her father, former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali. She also had the pleasure of co-hosting a live, three-hour New Year's Eve special on the roof of the famed Caesar's Palace.
An award winning reporter, she has earned national and local recognition for her work including a first place Associated Press Award for Best Spot News, two School Bell awards for education reporting and the Excellence in Medical Reporting Award from the Louisiana State Medical Society. The Louisiana Association of Broadcasters awarded Val with the Community Service Award for her year-long series on stroke prevention and awareness.
Val has received fellowships from Investigative Reporters and Editors and the Casey Journalism Center. Another fellowship from the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation took her on a two-week trip to Germany and Belgium where she interviewed political and religious leaders and stood before the remnants of the Berlin Wall.
Born in Pride, Louisiana, north of Zachary, Val graduated Summa Cum Laude in Broadcast Journalism from Louisiana State University. She was named an LSU Woman of Distinction in 2001.
Though she shares a first name with the first woman in space, she's simply "Val" to friends and family. She and her husband Wil live in Baton Rouge with their two calico cats.
In her spare time, Val loves visiting antique shops and collecting porcelain dolls. She also enjoys writing poetry and interior decorating. Val says things have come full circle now that she's back in her hometown on the station that gave her a first shot at being a broadcast journalist. If you see her shopping at one of her favorite stores around town, she'll always greet you with a smile and a wave.
