DONALDSONVILLE, La - Richard Zeringue was only 16 years old back in 1973 when the last great Mississippi river flood  hit. Though he remembers the flood doing damage to the houses in Donaldsonville, he knows it could have been so much worse, "when the river receded you saw spots in the levee that were just eating out by the current, you realize what could have been."

The damage was lessened by the first opening of the Morganza spillway, but even though that helped lessen some of the flooding, he vividly remembers how powerful the water was, "just to see the force of water coming out of there is just incredible."

No matter how much damage this year's flood does, he knows that everything will turn out fine in the end, "I feel like whatever happens this time around. We'll pick up the pieces, help each other out and get back on our feet again"
